Relocalizing VT: Robots Will Replace Your Job

Past event
Nov 23, 2017, 9 to 10:30 AM

Radio to listen to while you prepare Thanksgiving dinner! There are signs robots with true artificial intelligence are a decade or so away from rendering human workers obsolete in large swaths of the economy. Maybe it’s a good time to learn more about baking bread from King Arthur Flour’s head baker!

9:00 - 10:00 am
Kevin Drum is a long-time political blogger and long-form article writer, now with Mother Jones magazine. His article in the Nov/Dec issue is "You will lose your job to a robot--and sooner than you think.” We talk about why he thinks trends in computing will render most jobs obsolete, with significant effects starting in about ten years, and what we can be doing to smooth the transition to a society where few are employed. We explore some Relocalizing Vermont solutions Drum doesn’t get to in his article; the artcle is well worth a read, because if Drum is right, artificial intelligence will have as much impact over the coming decades as climate change and the transition to renewable energy.

Martin Philip traded his New York City finance career for an entry-level baker’s position in rural Vermont; now he is head bread baker at King Arthur Flour. His new book, Breaking Bread: A Baker's Journey Home in 75 Recipes, is part memoir, part manual.
