Vanishing Vermonters

Peter Miller’s latest book Vanishing Vermonters: Loss of a Rural Culture presents 23 Vermonters and how they cope in one of the most expensive states in the Union. The 91 photographs in this 168 page book, display Vermont life in all its realities: Vermont’s abandoned homes, unique roadside signs, barns standing in fields, wind turbines on mountaintops and solar fields planted on former farmland, rather than the typical iconic beauty one sees in postcards and calendars.

Peter will be speaking on his experience writing the book, which came about due to the number of emails and letters he received after writing a short history of the changes he’d noticed while photographing Vermont between 1950 and 2013. The stories within Vanishing Vermonters are taken straight from the mouths of the people Miller photographed. His hope is that the book, which he considers a “voice for Vermonters” will be a wake-up call to all of us.

Peter will be at the Waterbury Library with copies of the books for signing, Wednesday, November 29th from 6:30-8 p.m. in the SAL room. You’ll recognize your friends and neighbors in this publication.

Peter Miller was born in New York City and began his career in 1959 as a reporter for LIFE Magazine. For 20 years he was a contributing editor to SKI Magazine and a freelance writer for The New York Times, Smithsonian and many travel magazines. He has won numerous awards for his books and his photography, was named Vermonter of the Year and was honored by the Vermont Legislature for his work in documenting the culture of Vermont. His work has been exhibited in New York, Paris and Tokyo. His books and his black-and-white photography may be viewed at petermillerphotography.com.
