Come Sing! All welcome to join Shape Note Sing in Derby Line on November 26
On Sunday, November 26, at 3 PM, the Northeast Kingdom Shape Note Singers will host their monthly sing at the Unitarian Universalist Church hall in Derby Line, VT. The sing will be followed by a pot-luck dinner at 5 PM. All are welcome!
Shape note singing is also known Sacred Harp, the sacred harp being the human voice, as no instruments accompany the singing. Four different shapes are used on the note heads to help the untrained singer sight read music more easily. Singers sit around an open square in four sections, all facing in—alto, bass, trenor and soprano—and singers take turns choosing and leading 4-part songs, keeping the beat with hand motions. There are hundreds of shape note singing videos on youtube to check out, and a comprehensive website maintained by the Sacred Harp Musical Heritage Association at https://fasola.org.
Come and see what it is about this old-style music that attracts people today. Loaner books will be available. The singers meet in Derby Line from Oct- April, one Sunday afternoon a month, and during the summer months, there are weekly sings in Glover at the Bread and Puppet farm. More information about the Derby sings, you can call Joan at 525-6212.
