Classic Book Discussion Group: The Ginger Man by J.P. Donleavy
“The Ginger Man” by J.P. Donleavy has sold 45 million copies worldwide. A classic of the 1950s, it has never been out of print. The Modern Library named it one of the “100 Best Novels of the 20th Century” in 1998.

First published in Paris in 1955, the book is set in Dublin in post-war 1947. Upon its publication, the book was banned in Ireland and the U.S. by reason of obscenity. Donleavy is seen by critics as one of the post-war greats, in the company of Hemingway, Steinbeck and DosPassos. Kari at Yankee Bookshop is working to round up some used copies.Try there first! Here is an excellent NY Times obit of Donleavy who died recently. https://www.nytimes.com/.../jp-donleavy-acclaimed-author-of-the-ginger-man-dies-at-91.
