RUTLAND WELCOMES NEW ART SPOT: “77 GALLERY”

The grand opening of 77 Gallery, located on 77 Grove Street in the City of Rutland, will take place on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The inaugural exhibition is made up of 34 local artists from all over Rutland County with work ranging from landscape paintings to conceptual sculptures to collage work and even performance art.

Curator Bill Ramage says there’s “just about everything you can imagine” in this show aptly called, “Art of Rutland County,” and is “not to be missed.”

During the reception, visitors can expect to be greeted and nourished by many of the contributing artists, plus live classical music by Dave Burns, free sweet and savory refreshments, and a cash bar for wine.

In addition to the mingling and interacting with installations and sculpture, guests to the newest gallery to hit Rutland will be treated to a dance performance. In this gallery performance, Vital Spark North pays homage to the late maverick America choreographer Trisha Brown. Erika Schmidt has studied and worked with Trisha Brown Company members to recreate this excerpt. For Erika, a visual and performance artist, the construction of movement in space is much like the construction of a drawing or sculpture.

Vital Spark North is an interdisciplinary performance ensemble directed by Erika Lawlor Schmidt in collaboration with Gary Schmidt. They have been creating work since 1995 that integrate dance, physical theater, original soundscape, kinetic art, and film. Their projects have been produced throughout the US and Europe, and 77 Gallery is privileged to welcome Vital Spark North to perform on Sunday.

In addition to dance, Sunday’s reception will include the following visual artists: Alison Wallis, Ann McFarren, B Amore, Beth Miller, Bill Ramage, Bonnie Baird, Brigitte Rutenberg, Carol Driscoll, Carolyn Shattuck, Christine Holzschuh, Christine Schultz, Don Ramey, Erika Lawlor Schmidt, Fran Bull, Glenn Campbell, Grace Mellow, Joan Curtis, Jonathan Taylor, Judith Reilly, Karen Seward, Kerry O. Furlani, Kristen Partesi, Mareva Millarc, Mary Fran Lloyd, Nancy Weis, Oliver Schemm, Peter Huntoon, Phil Whitman, Richard Weis, Ruth Hamilton, Sally Jenne Keefe, Sandy Mayo, Warren Kimble, and William R. DeForest, III.

This exhibition runs from November 20, 2017 through March 30, 2018, and will have a closing reception on April 1, 2018, as well as other events ongoing throughout the run.

Artist-curator and retired academic, Bill Ramage, says, “The presence of art in Rutland County is underappreciated, but there is an incredible amount of talent and variety of work here. This [show] is just a sampling.”

Free and open to the public.
