Notice of Civil War Program, November 4, 1 to 5 pm
The public is invited to a free Civil War program focused on the battle of Gettysburg and the key role played by the Vermont units commanded by General Stannard. Organized by the Stannard Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans (SUV), the event on Saturday afternoon, November 4, will be held at the original 1871 Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) meeting place in Essex. Memorial Hall is located at 5 Towers Road, near the intersection of VT 128 and VT 15 (named the GAR Highway in 1937). Talks will describe the historic action at Gettysburg, as well as researching your Civil War ancestors. Those with ancestors who served in Vermont units can acquire a certificate and membership applications for the SUV will be available. Groups such as the Stannard House Restoration Committee and Vermont Civil War Stones (grave maintenance) will be on hand to explain their activities. Photo ops with Civil War clothing, weapons, and equipment for visitors to use, so bring your camera! For more information, see the Facebook page Stannard Camp VT or call (802) 871-5236 days or early evenings.
