Trying for Net-Zero in 1950's-era Home

Heat Pumps, Solar Panels, and Efficiency in Action

When: November 9, 2017

Where: Steve Maier & Priscilla Bremser Home
122 Green Mountain Pl., Middlebury

Time: 5:30 - 7:00PM

Want to save money on your heating bill while reducing your dependence on fossil fuels? Interested in how to put together an integrated home renovation project that brings together weatherization, solar energy production, and cold climate heat pumps?
Come to this relaxed open house featuring the home owners, architect, and contractor.

One of the more recent innovations installed at the Maier/ Bremser home are cold climate heat pumps. Over a typical Vermont winter, heat pumps can deliver up to three units of heat for every unit of electricity used, resulting in significant fuel cost savings. CCHPs can provide heat at higher efficiency and lower costs than conventional electrical resistance heating, oil, or propane heating systems. In contrast, conventional electrical resistance heating only delivers one unit of heat for every unit of electricity used.

What's more, in the summer, CCHPs reverse the process and also cool your home by removing heat and humidity from indoor air and expelling it to the outside. But a CCHP is much quieter than the typical window-mounted air-conditioner and uses less electricity.

With winter coming our way, come join Acorn Energy Co-op:

* View the results from a 1950's-era home renovation project with a goal of net-zero energy use (using no more energy than is generated)
* Learn from homeowner and Acorn Energy Co-op Board member Steve Maier talk about his choice to improve insulation and sealing, install solar panels, use heat pump technology, and monitor energy usage
* Learn about the rebates that are available to homeowners

The Acorn Renewable Energy Co-op is sponsoring this event as part of its ongoing energy education series.
