National Open Barn Day for Morgan Horses

Past event
Oct 28, 2017, 10 AM to 4 PM

The Morgan Horse will be front and center on Saturday, 28 October when several barns will open their doors to the public for an open barn day. This is a nationwide event organized by the American Morgan Horse Association to promote the breed. Addison County locations will be Jim McClay and Kathy Dorman, New Haven; Alan & Cindy Mayer, Bristol; and the UVM Morgan Horse Farm, Weybridge. Blackrose Morgans in Colchester will be hosting the event on the alternate date of 4 November. Open hours are specific to each barn, but generally 9AM to 4PM.
The Morgan horse is the Vermont State Animal. The forebear of all Morgan horses was a rugged little stallion which belonged to Justin Morgan of Randolph. From this exceptional horse sprang a new breed which traditionally could "outdraw, outrun, and out trot" any other horse. Today, the Morgan breed, still bearing the unique traits of its Vermont sire, is one of the favorite saddle, family and endurance breeds in America.
This event will be a fun day for the whole family. Each barn has their own unique attraction with their Morgans. Whether you are interested in the history of the Morgan Horse Farm which began in the 1870’s; or carriage driving; or unique bloodlines of the Morgans and their history, all that can be found at these barns and more.
Whether you are familiar with horses or not, this event is designed for those of any age who are unfamiliar with the Morgan horse, come and meet some Morgans. This event is free to the public at all locations. Some locations will have light refreshments.
Governor Phil Scott has designated the 28th of October as the Day of the Morgan Horse in Vermont. As such, a Proclamation signed by the Governor will be presented and read by the Secretary of Agriculture at 1PM on Saturday at the UVM Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge VT.
