LEDC and VtSBDC SPONSORING WORKSHOP ON PROMOTING THE CREATIVE ECONOMY

Morrisville – “Studies show that the Creative Economy in the U.S. employs more than 54 million workers and contributes over $700 billion to the U.S. economy.”

The Creative Economy is a wonderfully joyous, raucous and often frustrating world to navigate as a business owner or manager. This workshop will present ten topics to help in successfully working in and promoting this inventive and challenging market segment. These topics are:

• Does it Have Legs? You may be creative but these are the foundations of a sustainable business.

• The de Medici’s are dead…and so basically is funding for the arts. Just ask the NEA.

• Could Michelangelo have funded the painting of the Sistine Chapel using a Kickstarter campaign…probably not.

• Etsy is not a business plan.

• Art is sacred and above numbers…if this is your attitude it is going to be a hard go.

• If we buy the theory that all businesses exist because they solve a problem for the customer then these businesses are sunk…so how do we frame creative businesses so they do serve the client.

• How do we deal with the “ego” side of these businesses? Egos exist in all businesses but they are even more front and center in creative economy businesses so let’s deal with them head on.

• Creative people hire creative people.

• Be your business card.

• The big winners (if you judge success by the number of employees, the size of the bottom line…the traditional business metrics) are the artists who have been able to move from one-of-a-kind works to production.

Obviously, a lot of ground will be covered but we promise that you will leave this workshop energized, informed and ready to grow your creative economy business like never before.

The workshop presenter is Debra Boudrieau, an Area Business Advisor for the Vermont Small Business Development Center whose specialty is the Creative Economy. Boudrieau has owned three creative economy businesses of her own and has worked with Creative Economy clients ranging from $30,000 to $1,500,000 in sales. She is a dynamic and engaging speaker with a reputation for making complex topics understandable.

The workshop will take place on November 15th from 9 am to noon in the Community Room at Green Mountain Technology and Career Center in Hyde Park. The cost to attend is $49 and pre-registration is required. Please visit www.vtsbdc.org and click on TRAINING to register and pre-pay on line or email Vicki Blanchard at dblanchard@vtsbdc.org.
