Dear Neighbors,
This Monday, the City Council will convene its second of two regular meetings for the month of December and its final meeting of 2013.
The Council will convene our meeting at 7pm in Contois Auditorium with a presentation on the Neighborhood Safety Initiative from Police Chief Mike Schirling and Karen Vastine of the Community Justice Center. We will then have a presentation from Nate Wildfire, Assistant Director for Economic Development at CEDO on the Public Investment Action Plan which is the competitive process the Mayor announced several months ago for allocating Tax Increment Financing money for waterfront projects.
We will then be voting on a resolution regarding addressing Burlington's retirement system challenges. This is a follow up to the issues addressed in the Pension Summit we held in early November.
We have two ordinances to vote on Monday evening; one on building codes and the other on confinement of animals in vehicles.
Our last non-regular agenda item will be on redistricting. At our last meeting we asked the Charter Change Committee to review the issue of the School Board request to reduce the number of commissioners from 14 to 8 and the issue of terms for Councilors. On Monday, we will be voting to place on the ballot either a "4-8-12" plan (4 districts, 8 wards = 12 councilors) or a "4-12" plan (4 wards in the city x 3 councilors per ward = 12 councilors.) I would welcome your input on this issue and am happy to discuss the advantages (as well as the disadvantages) of both plans with you.
We will then have council committee reports, comments from councilors and the Mayor. Please keep in mind that you are welcome to come to a council meeting and speak to the Council on any subject you wish during our Public Forum which begins at 7:30pm.
Our last agenda item will be an Executive Session on Burlington Telecom.
Clickable agenda items can be found on the City's website: http://burlingtonvt.gov/CityCouncil/Agendas-and-Minutes---DMS-Documents/City-Council/2013/Agenda/ Please keep in mind that at all Council meetings are televised live on Channel 317 on Burlington Telecom.
As always, I welcome your questions and concerns. Please email or give me a call over the weekend or on Monday.
All my best,
Karen
