Nancy Kilgore in Middlebury. Thursday, Oct. 26, 6:30-8 p.m., the Vermont Book Shop, 38 Main St. Award-winning Vermont novelist Kilgore will read from and discuss her latest novel “Wild Mountain” which is set in Vermont.
Kilgore spins a warm and entertaining tale about a small Vermont village, with a cast of wonderfully indigenous characters: Charlie Perry, the curmudgeonly conservative farmer; Roz Allingworth, the commanding lesbian select board chair; and Frank MacFarland, the affluent liberal flatlander among them. In clumsier hands, Wild Mountain might have become a cliche, but Kilgore, a psychotherapist and former pastor, deftly probes the reader to question these superficial identities and to consider more generous interpretations of origin, belonging, and place.
