Concert: Gabriel Ferreras and Tony Lu

Gabriel Ferreras is currently a junior at Bennington College. His roots are in Mendoza, Argentina. He started playing piano at age 11. In 2012 he was awarded a UWC scholarship to attend Pearson College, an international boarding school for youth from around the world, on Vancouver Island, Canada. In 2015, Gabriel came to Bennington College with the goal of pursuing an education in foreign languages and music. Besides piano performance, he also studies conducting, and has successfully led two performances with Alleluia Chorale founded by himself. He also currently works as the music director and conductor for the Universalist Unitarian Church in Bennington.

Tony Lu was born in Wuhan, China in 1997. He started learning and playing piano at age 5 and due to his visual impairment Tony has always learned music by ear. In 2013 he moved to the US to study in St. Louis, Missouri. Tony joined the Webster University Chamber Music Preparatory Program in 2014 and performed numerous piano chamber works until he graduated in 2015. In the same year he won the Alton Symphony Orchestra concerto competition, and performed the Mozart piano concerto in D minor. He also got the second place of the Chicago Young Artist Chamber Music Competition with his chamber music collaborators. In addition, Tony had a successful performance at his high school senior recital, in which he performed Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Tony started studying at Bennington College in 2015, his concentrations are Mathematics, History and Piano performance. Tony has worked closely and performed with many Bennington College faculty including Christopher Lewis, Yoshiko Sato, Joan Forsyth, Bruce Williamson, Nathaniel Parke and Allen Shawn. Tony also works as piano tutor and accompanist helping most student in the music department.

Gabriel and Tony have been working together since Spring 2016 and up to date, they have performed works by Mozart, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Poulenc and Nowak. This piano duet performance series was planned as a musical offering for the communities outside of Bennington College as a way to create a connection between the college and the people of Bennington and surrounding areas.
