Hogback Wildlife/Ski Work Day

Past event
Oct 21, 2017, 9:30 AM to 12 PM

Join us for the third of four planned habitat workdays on Hogback this fall as part of our 10-year plan to re-open the five major ski slopes at Hogback, one every two years.  We’re now in Phase 3, opening the former Practice Slope. There are some interesting artifacts on this slope, including remains of the old rope tow, foundations from the T-bar lift, and a bronze survey marker embedded in a rock outcropping.  We’ll be clearing the 30+ year-old growth on the slope, and then letting it regrow. The regrowth will provide dense cover and valuable foods for a variety of birds, mammals and other wildlife. For the first year or two, the slope will be open and the skiing will be great.  When the shrubbery gets dense, the skiers can move on to the next slope, and  the wildlife will move in. Help us make this happen! If you can wield loppers or haul brush, we can use your help. Chain sawyers are particularly welcome. Meet at 9:00 on Saturday, Oct 21 in the parking lot near the white distillery building on Route 9 in Marlboro near the 100-mile view. From there, it’s an easy 5-minute hike to the worksite. Bring your own favorite tool or borrow one of ours. We’ll call it day by noon.
