The Burlington High School Scholars' Bowl team is pleased to announce it will be holding a middle school competition on November 11TH on the BHS campus. The tournament is open to all students in grades 8 and lower with the aim of introducing them to our fun, competitive extra-curricular activity.
Scholars' Bowl is a buzzer-based, question-and-answer competition similar to Jeopardy but featuring teams of four students and with questions focused more heavily on subjects across the school curriculum. Fans of the TV show – and students looking for a competitive outlet for what they have learned – should enjoy this fast-paced competition.
While we encourage schools to register teams of four for this event, we will also welcome individual registrations. We will do our best to pair single students together so that all participants get the opportunity to play.
The entry fee is $15 per student or $50 for a team of four, and there is no limit the number of teams a school may enter (though the $50 fee applies for each team). We will also offer a $5 discount for every working lockout buzzer system a school can bring, down to a minimum fee of $35 per team or $5 for an individual.
Our competition will be held in C Building at BHS, with registration taking place in Room C102 from 9:35 to 9:45 am. Matches will begin at 10 am, and we hope to have the tournament concluded by 4 pm.
A lunch break will be included in the schedule and the BHS team will be selling pizza at a price of $5 for two slices and a bottle of water. Students are also free to bring their own lunches.
Matches will be played on NAQT questions (set MS-23), using a tossup-and-bonus format. To familiarize yourself with the style of competition, a sample set of questions can be found here: https://www.naqt.com/samples/middle-school-series.pdf
Please note that pre-registration is required, and the deadline for signing up is November 9th. To register, email me at kcommo@scholarsbowl.org and include a contact email address and phone number, the number of students and/or teams you wish to register, and whether or not those students will be participating in our pizza order.
You may also email me at kcommo@scholarsbowl.org with any questions you might have about this tournament or the Scholars' Bowl in general.
