Join us at the historic Barn House for a series of events held between Friday October 13 and Sunday October 15 to learn about the heritage and art behind the making of three different pies that are a part of African American culinary traditions: minced pork pie, sweet potato pie and bean pie. Chef Omar Tate will be up from New York to share samples of his pies as well as some of his knowledge and personal reflections on the place of pies in African American history and culture. There are also opportunities to enroll in a short pie-making class with Chef Omar!
This Friday at the Barn House from 5:30 - 6:30 pm, a free community "Cooking and Conversation" gathering where we'll hear about Chef Omar's research into the culinary history of these pies, his fascinating journey from Italian cuisine to African American traditional cuisine (really!), AND taste samples of his pies (yum!). Maximum seating: 30 people; sign-up in advance.
Saturday and Sunday: 3 pie classes and lots of pie storytelling with Chef Omar. Maximum 8 people per class (1 bean pie class, 1 sweet potato pie class and 1 minced pork pie class).
