Rally 'Round the Banner
Brattleboro Town Manager Peter Elwell will attend the Oct 8 "We Celebrate Democracy/Civil Rights For All" banner raising to make a statement on behalf of the town. Oct. 9 is Indigenous Peoples Day. The Brattleboro fire department will hang the banner over Main Street on Sunday the eighth of October, from 8-9 a.m. The banner will fly in honor of indigenous people, in recognition of their suffering, and in support of equal civil rights for all people.
You are invited. Democracy/civil rights need you to be there.
Two people came to our first banner raising on April 23 . On June 25 we had one person. On Labor Day Weekend we had eleven people turn out . They included Brattleboro select board chair, Kate O'Connor, and two Brattleboro police officers, and one current and two former town officials from Marlboro. Let's keep the momentum building.
The Works will be open. The Brooks House board of directors is supporting us by letting us use the Brooks House lobby for the event. Please prepare a statement to read to people who attend. Join us if you possibly can, and keep the momentum building.
Right now the Trump administration is holding a hate rally all across our country. We must rally the same amount of "love and unity" in response. Taken together all our positive nonviolent public actions do add up to a huge "love rally." Let's work together to make it even bigger and better. Civil rights say "I love you" to all people. The banner raising is just a small part of our "love rally," but every part is an essential part. We need to be in the streets, in public, standing up for loving, caring, sharing and helping, in a massive way.
The Southern Poverty Law Center founded in 1971 in Montgomery Alabama and working for racial and social justice since then says: "Every act of hatred should be met with an act of love and unity". Raising the banner over Main Street and standing up for civil rights for all people is an act of love and unity. An act of love, because hate is fuel for the fascist fire. Check out their publication "Ten Ways to Fight Hate", page 12.
Thank you to our supporters and donors, the Town of Brattleboro and the Brattleboro fire department.
We love to see the "We Celebrate Democracy/Civil Rights For All" banner flying over Main Street. It just makes us feel good to see it there on Main Street.
That's because we believe our big job is to build a positive non-violent "Equal Civil Rights For All movement". The banner is like a flag for that movement.
Rally 'round the banner.
Civil rights are under attack. Let's stand up to the forces of corporate tyranny and fascism. If we don't, who will? Come out in public and show your support for civil rights by taking part in this positive nonviolent public action. We hope we will see you there. Please RSVP so the town can plan for the event.
