“Pushing the Limits” book discussion series: THE CIRCLE by Dave Eggers for November
Participants of the “Pushing the Limits” book series have enjoyed the experience so much that everyone decided to read another book suggested by one of the participants, also funded by the grant. Copies of the book will be available early in October and the book discussion will be held on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 PM. Tat the Jeudevine Memorial Library. The following Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 PM the film version of the book will be shown followed by a discussion.
This book fits in with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) theme of the “Pushing the Limits” discussion series which is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The main character, Mae Holland, is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. But, what begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.
