Eagle Square was one of Shaftsbury's oldest, largest and longest operating industries. One of the first U.S. patents for a steel carpenter's framing square was issued here in 1817. In 1854 the 24-tool graduator gave the company amazing advantage over its competitors. The creation of the take-down square secured yet another patent in 1906. In 1915 the plant was sold to Stanley Rule & Level Company and continued to flourish due to the folks of Shaftsbury who took pride in good, honest, skillful workmanship. Sadly, a nearly 200 year tradition of fine tool making ended in 2001.
This event will highlight the historical importance of tools created and manufactured in Shaftsbury, VT in the building of America.
