Guaranteed Primary Health Care in Vermont: Fact or Fiction?

A free forum with a legislator, and a health industry expert and physician will be held on Thursday, September 14, 6:30-8:30pm to discuss the challenges Vermont is facing in establishing a publicly funded, guaranteed primary health care system. Come learn about the costs that we will have to pay, the types of services we will receive and the changes we will have to make to receive services. Sponsored by the Lamoille County Democrats, this forum will be held in the Lamoille Senior Citizens Center, in Morrisville.

Participants will feature Dr. Anna Carey, health care system expert and advocate of a primary care system; State Representative, Sarah Copland-Hanzas a Democrat from Orange County, who is Vice Chair of the Health Insurance Committee of National Conference of Insurance Legislators and a legislator in support of H248 & S53 for public financing of primary care. Former State Representative and current Vermont Health Care Advocate Michael Fisher will also join the panel. Hannah Marshall, Managing Editor of The Stowe Reporter, The News & Citizen & The Waterbury Record will be the moderator.

Following the 2015 legislative session in which two bills proposing publicly financed primary care were introduced in the Vermont House and Senate with tri-partisan support, the legislature asked for a detailed cost analysis.

The study detailed the cost of providing primary care to every Vermonter with no deductibles and copays. For just $48 more per year, all Vermonters can have access to primary care, financed fairly, according to our means. Ultimately the implementation of a publicly financed primary care system will result in savings on long term health care costs by early detection of diseases, and the reduction in Emergency Room visits and hospitalizations.

After their formal presentation, there will be a question and answer period. Please bring your friends and neighbors to this important presentation, so that all Vermonters can be informed about the challenges facing us in establishing this new type of health care system.
