Job Description:
The Store Clerk is responsible for helping customers with shopping needs and check out, stocking inventory, creating displays, receiving product, and completing other administrative duties for the store and center. In addition, the clerk will act as an ambassador for the Peace & Justice Center by providing excellent customer service; they may engage interested customers in conversation about the organization as a whole, including membership opportunities, as well as the importance of the Fair Trade movement. This position will work alongside volunteers who staff the store, some of whom are in job experience programs and will benefit from the employee’s abilities.
Who we are:
The Peace & Justice Center is a membership-based non-profit organization whose mission is to create a just and peaceful world. Founded in 1979 to do anti-nuclear war work, we work on the interconnected issues of economic and racial justice, peace, and human rights through education, advocacy, training, non-violent activism and community organizing. The current campaigns focus on Racial Justice, Fair Trade, and Peace Education. We also operate a fair trade and local store on Burlington’s waterfront. The Peace & Justice Store offers customers a wide variety of fairly traded goods from the global south, local and eco-friendly products, and educational materials that help customers explore a variety of social justice issues.
Required Qualifications:
Strong interpersonal skills, ability to learn a Point of Sales system (cash register), interest in Fair Trade and related issues of social justice. Retail experience and social justice work preferred.
Approximate Hours per Week: 15 Hours
Expected Shifts: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 2:30-7:30pm, shifts may fluctuate. This position starts October 1.
