Community Film Screening and Discussion

A community showing of "The Hungry Heart," a new documentary on prescription drug addiction and recovery in Vermont will be presented at Harwood Union High School on Tuesday, December 17 at 6pm. There will be a question-and-answer session after the film, led by the film’s director, Bess O’Brien, along with several cast members in recovery. This film has received rave reviews from other schools and communities who have viewed it and held similar discussions.
The showing and discussion, part of Harwood’s Supporting our Youth Series, will follow the same presentation held earlier that day for Harwood High School students, providing an opportunity for parent/child dialogue around this shared experience. The evening event is free and open to all community members.

The Hungry Heart, produced by Kingdom County Productions, provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of prescription drug addiction through the work of Vermont Pediatrician Fred Holmes whose patients struggle with this disease. But the film is not ultimately about the medical treatment provided by Dr. Holmes. It is about the simple but profound connection that Dr. Holmes creates with each patient and how important listening and respect is for these young addicts as part of their recovery process. The film shines a light on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that many of these young addicts yearn for but do not have in their lives.

The Hungry Heart opens up dialogue around many issues connected to addiction and recovery and serves as a jumping off point for discussion and action steps that many communities need.
