Peace Corps Volunteer to Speak on Service in Cambodia

Chester Rotary will hold another in its series of First Thursday talks on Thursday, September 7 at the Fullerton Inn. The program is free and the public is invited. This month’s speaker is Michael Wanigasekera, who will speak about his two years of service as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in a small village in Cambodia.

The program will run from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with hors d’oeuvers served and a cash bar available.

Mr. Wanigasekera taught English, organized the building of a basketball court, taught his students to play basketball and got them into games with teams from other villages in the area. He created a filter system for clean water for the village. He took his students on a bus trip to Phnom Penh; the first time many of them had traveled by bus outside the village.

Mr. Wanigasekera now serves as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer in in the All-4-One Program in Springfield, Vermont.

His home is in the Dallas, Texas area. He holds an M.B.A. and a B.B.A. from University of New Mexico.
