What is a Death Cafe?
At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death. Our objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. Everyone has their own reasons for getting involved in Death Cafe. There is no agenda, objective or themes. Participants guide the conversation.
What is Death Cafe not?
Death Cafe is not a grief support or counseling session, it is a discussion group. Participants come to share their thoughts, beliefs, stories, questions, musings. Death Cafe is not a place to argue or persuade and no one has to defend their position, we are all gathered to listen, as well as speak.
How was Death Cafe started?
Death Cafe was started by Jon Underwood in 2010. Jon decided to develop a series of projects about death one of which was to focus on talking about death. In November Jon read about the work of Bernard Crettaz in the Independent newspaper. Inspired by Bernard's work, Jon immediately decided to use similar model for his own project, and Death Cafe was born.
"Nothing marks to community of the living like sharing food and drink" ~Bernard Cretan, Cafe Mortel
