Galvanizing Social Justice Through Comics
Marching Forward with John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell

Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell are co-authors of MARCH, a graphic novel trilogy that recounts Lewis's experiences throughout the Civil Rights Movement. The three will give an hour-long keynote presentation, followed by a Q&A.

Regrettably, this keynote presentation coincides with the Jewish New Year holiday of Rosh Hashanah. The presentation will be live-streamed and recorded; anyone with an Internet connection can watch it live from 5:00-6:30pm on Thursday, September 21, or watch it on a future date.

MARCH has won many awards, including the National Book Award. This event is co-presented by the International Institute’s Conflict and Peace Initiative, the Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series, and the King-Chavez-Parks Visiting Professorship Program. Additional support is provided by the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; Department of Political Science; Institute for the Humanities; Office of Community-Engaged Academic Learning (CEAL); and Rackham Graduate School.

An ongoing series of Fall 2017 events— book clubs, local school programs, community dialogues, a Hatcher Graduate Library exhibit about the Civil Rights Movement, a social justice comics contest, a screening of "Selma," a social justice research symposium, and much more— is being organized across campus and in the local community in connection to this keynote presentation. The goal is to inspire critical reflection on social justice advocacy and spark actions that catalyze change.
