Aging in Vermont: Communities on the Move!

The Montpelier Senior Activity Center is working with the Vermont Association of Senior Centers and Meal Providers to put on the following conference. We are very excited to be offering this opportunity to come together, learn and talk about Aging in Vermont: Communities on the Move at the Killington Grand Hotel and Resort

The conference organizers are:

• Vermont Association of Senior Center and Meal Providers

Our keynote speaker is Katherine Freund, the founder of the Independent Transportation Network®(ITN), and founder and President of ITNAmerica®. She Chaired the Task Force to Study the Safe Mobility of Maine's Aging Population, served on the Advisory Committee for the 2005 White House Conference on Aging and as a National Transit Institute Fellow.

We are excited to have Katherine as our keynote. Her theme for our conference is:
The Storybook Tour: Stories From A Solo 11,491-Mile Drive Across America
Kelly Melekis, Ph.D. is our lead panelist on self-neglect. Dr. Melekis is a Professor of Social Work at Skidmore College. Formerly with the University of Vermont, her scholarly work in the field of elder self-neglect helped form the foundation of the current practices and policies utilized by the State of Vermont and Area Agencies on Aging in responding to self-neglect and supporting those whose lives are impacted.

Dr. Melekis is the author of "Responding to Self-Neglect in Vermont," a report to the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (2014) and her scholarly work has included "Establishing a Community Response to Elder Self-Neglect" (Gerontologist, 2015).

Our Breakout Sessions in the morning and afternoon include:
• Understanding the Needs of Caregivers and Available Resources and Support
• Self-Care for Professional Service Providers and Volunteers: Maintaining Healthy Boundaries and Preventing Burnout
• Transportation
• How to Start and Manage a Volunteer Program
• Innovations in Nutrition and Meals Programs

Our Table Talks at lunchtime include:
• Local volunteer programs (including Cares and Aging in Place)
• Dementia Programs Including Memory Cafe's
• Hoarding / Hoarder Task Force
• Self-neglect, Addictions, and Mental Health
• Advocacy and Reframing Aging
• Adult Protective Services
• A2B Mobility Project (Interactive Transportation Map) and other transportation innovations
• Innovative Senior Center Programs

• Registration is $60 and includes all sessions, food and beverages throughout the day.
