Sunday, August 6 “Countering Islamophobia” with Rev. M’ellen Kennedy, Ahmad and Moya Abdel-Mawgood and friends
We are witnessing a rise in anti-Muslim speech, crimes and sentiment in this country and abroad. This is a great opportunity for us to learn more about Islam and to counter the hostile image of Muslims being portrayed in the media. Rev. M’ellen is a Sufi minister (the mystical tradition of Islam) as well as a Unitarian Universalist minister and for seven years has been part of the national grassroots efforts to stand with American Muslims and stand for democracy. Ahmad Abdel-Mawgood is an Egyptian Muslim and Sufi. They and other Muslim friends will address some of the common misconceptions about Islam and what we can do now to be a force for peace and harmony in our fractured world. Let’s take back our lives from fear and cultivate friendship and understanding with Muslims. The service will feature special music including accompaniment by pianist Alison Cerutti. Potluck following the service. All are welcome to stay for a small group discussion after the potluck and a chance to speak in more depth with our Muslim visitors.
At the Washington Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Rte. 110 (at the corner of Firehouse Lane), Washington. Childcare provided.
