My Brother’s Keeper Burlington in partnership with Service Rendered Inc. and VT Elite Basketball will be holding a community youth basketball tournament event on Saturday, August 12 from 12:00-5pm at Roosevelt Park. This event is a free community basketball tournament that has been provided by Service Rendered Inc. for over 15 years. The event will provide food, music, resource fair as well as a youth survey to learn from youth on their access to jobs, education and their sense of safety and connection in the community.
Attending the tournament to address and award the players is Burlington School District Superintendent, Yaw Obeng, BPD Deputy Chief Shawn Burke, Boys and Girls Club Youth Leader Aden Haji.
Service Rendered Inc. is a Vermont-based non-profit that is dedicated to inspiring youth and helping them reach their goals by providing programs and spaces. VT Elite Basketball’s mission is to provide leadership, character development, and meaningful physical activity to the young men and women of the greater Burlington area through competitive, organized basketball.
My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) is a White House cradle to career initiative President Obama launched in 2014 to address and recognize the persistent opportunity gaps in employment and education, particularly for boys and young men of color. Since its launch, nearly 250 cities and towns across the country have accepted President Obama’s call to action and Burlington became a MBK community in 2016. Our main goal is to improve the working relationships in the delivery of resources between City Departments, businesses, schools and youth organizations for all youth in the Burlington community.
Through collaboration of youth events like this, MBK Burlington hopes that this basketball tournament can bring all the people in this community together to support and show the youth that there are people in their community who care about their well-being. The tournament also serves as a vehicle to expose and connect youth to economic, educational and recreational opportunities that encourage youth to participate in the community in positive ways to a good future.
This upcoming year, the CEDO AmeriCorps program is proud to focus its goals on Burlington’s MBK initiative. Our aim is to continue to provide collective responses to pressing community issues, keeping youth on track and safe, promoting healthy lifestyles, accessing employment and educational opportunities, as well as creating system changes with youth to be successful leaders.
