Though the concept of human interconnectedness with nature is a familiar one to most of us, it is a philosophy that was adopted fairly recently in Western culture. Influenced by Taoist and Zen Buddhist ideas imported from ancient China, this philosophy was reframed for European and American readers and thinkers by the poets of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This is the topic of David Hinton's new book, THE WILDS OF POETRY, which he will discuss and read from at The Galaxy Bookshop on Tuesday, August 1st, beginning at 7 p.m.
David Hinton is the author of many translations of classical Chinese poetry and philosophy as well as the wholly original works HUNGER MOUNTAIN, EXISTENCE, and FOSSIL SKY. His books have earned wide acclaim and many awards, including a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
