Community Dinner Kick Off Concert & Barbecue

On Sunday, July 30th, Brownsville Community Church will sponsor a potluck barbecue and concert kicking off the return of its Community Dinners. This is the second of a series of free concerts open to the public so far in 2017. The concert will start at 4:00 at the church and will be followed by a barbecue at 5:00 in Tribute Park adjacent to the church.
Part of the proceeds from the Community Dinners - which will start up this fall - will benefit the Reading – West Windsor Food Shelf.
The Brownsville Community Church Outreach Committee will supply hotdogs, hamburgers, rolls, condiments, soft drinks & chips. Barbecue attendees are asked to share a favorite salad or dessert.
The July 30th concert will feature favorite classics and original compositions. Solos, duets & trios by Skip Downing, Sten Bowen, Christian Huebner, Susan Downing, Alexandria Leary and Noah Huebner will entertain concert goers.
Susan J. Downing holds a B.A. in Music from Wheaton College (Norton, MA) and B.M in Education from Keene State College. She taught public school general music for 8 years, grade K-5. Susan has been teaching private piano lessons in her home for 35 years and additionally at the Upper Valley Music Center in Lebanon, NH. Susan thoroughly enjoys teaching students of all ages as well as performing with her husband, Skip (trumpet) at local events. Susan and Skip have two grown sons, Charles (and wife Abigail) and Seth who are also musicians. One of the highlights of their childhood years was playing as a family quartet (one piano, 3 trumpets) in church for special occasions. Susan especially enjoys accompanying at Brownsville Community Church, West Lebanon Baptist Church, and others throughout the area. Susan will be performing “Two Spirituals” a duet arranged by Skip Downing for trumpet and piano.
Edmund “Skip” Downing, principal of Bywater Piano Tuning, studied at Gordon College, played the Trumpet in the Air Force and presently teaches at the Upper Valley Music Center. He is a sought after trumpet player, performing in local shows and with groups in the area. An original composition by Skip arranged for piano and two trumpets will be one of the highlights of the concert.
Sten Bowen, an English major at Gordon College in Wenham, MA, moved with his wife, Amy, to Los Angeles to pursue his musical career. While in California, Sten toured and recorded with various artists for a number of years. The Bowen’s now live with their two children in Reading Vermont.
Christian Huebner, Pastor of Brownsville Community Church, grew up in West Windsor, Vt. After pursuing a gift for music from an early age with his first position as organist and choir director at age 11, he completed a double masters in Organ Performance and Choral Conducting. Christian studied with local Organ Master, Harriette Slack Richardson after which he studied under Dr. Judy Congdon and Dr. Jonathan Biggers. Christian studied improvisation with Dr. Gerre Hancock and has been recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio. Rev. Huebner is a composer, scholarship and competition winner in Organ Performance and he has appeared with the Rochester and Binghamton Philharmonics. And, he was the director of the 120 voice Binghamton University Chorus.
Another gifted artist, Windsor’s Alexandria Leary, will be on piano. Allie is a talented young musician who plays with expression and maturity uncharacteristic for her age. She is currently studying under the area’s top piano performance instructor and will offer an original composition.
Noah Huebner is a talented trumpet player entering the seventh grade this fall at the Mid Vermont Christian School. Noah has performed for audiences multiple times in the past few years and has studied under Skip Downing.
