PICTURING FREDERICK DOUGLASS
More than Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman and George Custer, escaped slave and leading abolitionist Frederick Douglass was the most photographed person of the 19th century.
This Sunday noted historian, author, Harvard University Professor and Douglass scholar John Stauffer will present some of the 160 known photographs from his new book, PICTURING FREDERICK DOUGLASS, many of which have never been seen publicly and were long lost to history.
Stauffer, a compelling orator in his own right, will illustrate Douglass’s belief in the power of visual images to democratize society and his personal efforts to present a more accurate portrayal of black Americans.
Copies of Stauffer’s ground-breaking book, Picturing Frederick Douglass: An IIlustrated Biography of the Nineteenth Century s Most Photographed American will be available for sale and signing.
This lecture is being held in conjunction "Yours in the Cause: Faces of Radical Abolition" on view at Rokeby through October 28. The lecture is partially supported by a grant from the Vermont Humanities Council.
