Mothers, Childbirth and Children- a Scrag Mountain Music recital to benefit the Vermont Midwives Association

On Friday December 6th in Randolph and Sunday December 8th in Montpelier, Scrag Mountain Music presents a benefit voice recital featuring VT soprano Mary Bonhag. Proceeds from the two recitals will be donated to the Vermont Midwives Association, a community of professional home birth and birth center midwives who promote the health and well-being of mothers and babies through comprehensive and compassionate care, public education, and the development of the midwifery profession. The recital will explore the various expressions and experiences of pregnancy, birth, motherhood, and life with young children through music.

“This is an intensely personal program for me,” says Mary. “I was privileged to experience midwifery care because my son Glen was born at home. The music on this program includes songs I have been waiting for an opportunity to sing for many years.” One such cycle is Francis Poulenc’s whimsical and imaginative set called La Courte Paille, as well as Leonard Bernstein’s I Hate Music. Both cycles are written from the perspective of young children with plenty of humor and poignancy. Mary will also sing a set of familiar and lesser-known lullabies and a very early song cycle of Randolph composer Kathy Wonson Eddy. Joining her at the piano will be Montpelier pianist Mary Jane Austin. Mary’s husband, double bassist/composer Evan Premo, will join as well with his own composition for bass and piano, Artemis in the Oak Grove, and his arrangement of Sometimes I feel like a motherless child for bass and soprano.

Admission is: Come as you are. Pay what you can—with proceeds going directly to the VT Midwives’ Association.
