Tuesday, July 11, at 7 pm, in the historic Woodbury Town Hall, Ben Kilham presents "The Social Black Bear: What Bears Have Taught Me About Being Human."
Black bears, thought to be solitary, have a different type of social behavior that possibly parallels early human behavior. They show evidence of reciprocal altruism, matri-linear hierarchy, and a mix of intentional and emotional communication. Bears can live for as many as forty years, which allows them long-term benefits from forming relationships with fellow cooperators.
Ben Kilham, a wildlife biologist based in Lyme, NH, has devotedly studied the habits of black bears, and interacted with these amazing animals. He and his family have accepted orphaned cubs into their home and successfully reintroduced them into the wild. Author and documentary filmmaker, Kilham shares his shares his experiences in this fascinating evening.
The Woodbury Town Hall is located on Route 14 in Woodbury Village, beside the Woodbury Village Store. This event is generously sponsored by the Woodbury Conservation Commission and the Woodbury Fund.
