Upcoming event: a public informational meeting about alternative business models. This topic is generally important to our thinking about economic development, and specifically relevant now as we consider the future of Burlington Telecom. Our settlement with Citibank requires us to sell BT, so, organizationally, BT will change from a municipal department to a business entity, either stand-alone or as part of a larger business organization. We will have to weigh a variety of factors as we evaluate proposals to buy BT, applying the criteria we developed together as a community. One consideration is the kind of business organization that will result from the sale. Because we tend to be more familiar with conventional forms of business ownership and organization, this event has been organized to build understanding of other options, specifically cooperatives and "public benefit" corporations. All are welcome!
