Event: Jun 11, 2017, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM

The Friends of the Plainfield Opera House are pleased to announce the next performance in their 2017 concert series.

On Sunday, June 11 at 4:00 pm Gamelan Sulukala will perform American and Indonesian music for Javanese Gamelan.

A Javanese Gamelan is a group - or orchestra - of about 30 instruments ranging from huge gongs to tiny flutes with lots of xylophone and kettle type instruments in between. Gamelan has a long history in central Vermont, going back to the late 1960’s when Dennis Murphy built the first gamelan anywhere in the world outside of Java at Goddard College. Gamelan Sulukala was made for Goddard College in Java and is a full complement of instruments fashioned from bronze and iron.
This concert will feature a wide variety of music ranging from traditional pieces, to contemporary compositions written by Murphy, Barbara Benary and Jody Diamond.

General admission is $15, $10 - seniors, $5 - students, $5 - special rate. Tickets are available at the door or at catamountix.com. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program.

If you are familiar with gamelan, don’t miss this rare concert. If you've never heard it you are in for a treat! Please come, bring your family and friends and support a worthwhile organization.
