Oakland labor historian and journalist Peter Shapiro will discuss his new book, "Song of the Stubborn One Thousand," on Tuesday, June 6th at 7 p.m. at the Maple Corner Community Center in Calais. Released by Haymarket Books in November, the book tells the story of how one thousand mostly Mexican women, nearly all with no previous organizing experience, won an 18-month long strike in the 1980s against one of the biggest frozen food companies in California. Told in the words of the strikers themselves, implicit themes of the book are that the female migrant workers who led the strike represent the future of the labor movement, and that the strike was a powerful testament to what ordinary working people can do when they join together. Shapiro will discuss the history, lessons, and current implications of the strike with a focus on its relevance to the issues facing immigrants, women, and labor unions today. The event is co-sponsored by Indivisible Calais and Migrant Justice and is free and open to the public.
