I wanted to share information about Bella Voce’s “Holst and Harp” concerts which are happening this weekend (I sing in this choir). Artistic Director, Dawn Willis has prepared a program of intriguing music, ranging from Gustav Holst’s exotic Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda and Two Eastern Pictures beautifully accompanied by our special guest, harpist Rebecca Kauffman, to exciting renditions of spirituals and gospel classics such as Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and My Soul is Anchored in the Lord and a new arrangement of Beautiful River (Shall we Gather at the River) created just for us by our favorite arranger Robert De Cormier. You'll hear those wonderful pieces as well as works by Samuel Barber, Francis Poulenc, Moses Hogan, Sir David Willcocks and more!
The chorus will also be performing two captivating pieces by Richard Stöhr – quite possibly the first time they've been heard in the United States!
Stöhr was a teacher and composer at the Vienna Academy. There, his students included Herbert von Karajan, Rudolf Serkin, Erich Leinsdorf, Samuel Barber and Marlene Dietrich. Because of his Jewish heritage Stöhr was forced to leave Austria in 1938. He continued his composing and teaching career in the United States at the Curtis Institute where he taught Leonard Bernstein and Eugene Bossart. In 1941 he came to teach at Saint Michaels College, here in Vermont, and stayed until his death in 1967. Sadly his later compositions went unpublished and have been rarely performed. This year, many of his choral works will be revived in a joint recording project being developed that will include performances of Stöhr's music by several Vermont choruses including Counterpoint and Bella Voce. Learn more about Richard Stöhr.
