Relocalizing VT Thurday: Brownouts This Summer?

Past event
May 18, 2017, 9 to 10:30 AM

Coming up Thursday on Goddard College Community Radio - a look at our electrical supplies this summer and beyond, including the effects of the newly finalized Vermont rule on sound from wind turbines.

9:00 - 10:00 am
New England will have less electricity-generating capacity than expected available this summer. This is not likely to cause shortages—but a prolonged heat wave could change that. Matt Kakley of the New England grid operator ISO New England will explain the situation.

Texas has an electricity grid all its own, and they’ve adopted renewables faster than anywhere else in the country. What happens to the electrical grid as intermittent sources like wind and solar comprise more and more of the electrical supply. Joshua Rhodes at the University of Texas at Austin says it looks great in Texas.

And the Vermont Public Service Board just finalized a new rule on permissible sound from wind turbines. What effect will it have on the future of wind in Vermont? We’ll hear from Olivia Campbell Anderson of Renewable Energy Vermont and Annette Smith of Vermonters for a Clean Environment.

10:00 - 10:30 am
Resilience Thoughts, a locally told Extempo story, plus upcoming events related to energy, food, and the local economy at the end of the age of oil.
