Native Plant Talk with Wild Seed Project

Past event
Jun 9, 2017, 7:30 to 8:30 PM

On Friday, June 9th, 2017 from 7:30-8:30, join us for a lecture with Heather McCargo, the founder and director of the Wild Seed Project.

Wild Seed Project is a Maine-based nonprofit that works to increase the use of native plants in all landscape settings in order to conserve biodiversity, encourage plant adaption in the face of climate change, and to create pollination and migration corridors for insects, birds and other wildlife. Wild Seed Project sells seeds of locally sourced wild-type native plants and educates the public on propagation techniques so that a wide range of citizens can participate in increasing native plant populations. They have an interactive website at wildseedproject.net and publish an annual magazine, Wild Seed.

About the Event: Grass Root Seed Propagation of Native Plants

The seeds of wild plants have a different set of needs than those of garden and vegetable species. This talk, led by the founder and director of the Wild Seed Project Heather McCargo, will describe the reproductive life cycle of different types of native plants and explain how we can change our landscape practices to help support wild plant reproduction and survival. Growing native plants from seed is a different way to interact with our native flora and is an inexpensive way to produce a lot of plants. Heather will explain native seed sowing and outdoor propagation techniques as well as current trends with native plants in the nursery trade. This class will cover:

-Plant cultivation strategies
-Native plant reproduction
-Ways to properly handle different seed types
-Proper mowing practices in non-haying areas
-How to bring back diversity in native flora
-What farmers and gardeners can do to support native plants
-How to create pollinator corridors
-How to include wild plants in home yards, gardens and farms
-Interactive seed sowing demonstration

Tickets are sliding scale from $5-10 and all proceeds to go Wild Seed Project. Learn more and buy tickets at wildseedproject.eventbrite.com
