Learn to make a real working banjo that can make beautiful music with inexpensive materials. The Box Banjo is a classic homemade instrument.

A pine stick is first passed through a small cardboard box. Two nylon fishing line strings are added using eye screws for tuners. Once the strings are tensioned, it is ready to play. Decoration makes each instrument unique.

Dennis Waring is an ethnomusicologist, instrument maker, educator and performer. Comfortable with all styles of music, Dennis preforms throughout the northeast with various music groups.

He offers his globally oriented productions through lecture presentations in colleges and universities as well as assembly programs and workshops in public schools. As a Master Teaching Artist, he was honored as Connecticut State Troubadour for 2003 and 2004.

Dennis has written six books on musical instruments and has traveled around the world two times by ship. His instrument making workshops for people of all ages is a signature activity and his DVD “From Trash To Tunes” has garnered international recognition. He invents and manufactures instruments of all kinds.

Over his career, Dr. Waring has built thousands of box banjos with people of all ages. He can attest that the pride of building ones own instrument is hugely gratifying.
