Another Earth Day Event

Recent news headlines read: “World on the Brink of Nuclear War.” Such headlines should be scaring people have to death, but a disturbing apathy seems to reign. Are we going to let our President decide what should be done to respond to North Korea…even if that response is nuclear war? Doesn’t Congress have some say in deciding a response that may start WWIII or destroy the entire planet?

This Saturday’s April 22nd Earth Day peace conference—Building a World Beyond War: What Will It Take?—from 9 AM to 4:30 PM at the Winooski School District, 60 Normand Street in Winooski, VT, couldn’t be more timely or more important. Too many Americans believe that they are more secure because they are spending more on the military. Nothing could be farther from the truth. And now is the time to gather the facts before a new war is begun or targeted nuclear weapons are used. We all live on one planet and in one large global environment. While Korea seems far away, a nuclear strike will affect the world environment!

We hope everyone will come hear our keynote speaker and 2017 Nobel Peace Nominee, David Swanson, speak about how war makes us less safe and how war is a lie. Swanson speaks from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. During the day, thirteen Vermont-focused workshops will cover a variety of topics related to militarism and war. Our closing speaker, Patricia Hynes of the Traprock Center for Peace and Justice, will illustrate the interconnected between environmental, economic justice, human and worker rights, militarism and more from 3:15 to 4:30 PM, urging each of us to take action.
