2 Moon Smile, at the York Street Meeting House

The Upright Steeple Society will host a new chamber opera, “2 Moon Smile,” by Australian composer Padma Newsome, on Saturday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the York Street Meeting House in Lyndon Corner. The music draws on classical and folk, minimalist and aria traditions. Chamber music for voice, clarinet, bassoon, and piano is juxtaposed with dance music performed by electric guitar, drums, fiddle, and keyboard. The composer is calling the piece a p’opera, because it’s a collection of songs, chamber music, and dances strung loosely together by an innate narrative.

Bassoonist Rachael Elliott, who grew up in Lyndon and now lives in Germany, was a founding member of both the Heliand Consort and Clogs. She says that “2 Moon Smile” showcases the best of both ensembles.
