On Tuesday, April 11, the Burlington School Board will meet with the Burlington Education Association (the teachers' union) and a mediator in an effort to resolve remaining issues that led to impasse in March. Among the core issues to be discussed are the different positions on operational changes, health care, and what constitutes a sustainable rate of growth in total compensation. A summary of the Board's and union's positions moving into mediation can be found on the District's website on the negotiations page: http://www.bsdvt.org/modules/cms/pages.phtml?pageid=332596&842c23
The Board's proposals and its efforts in mediation continue to be guided by the overall goal of achieving a sustainable contract that will allow the District to focus on a more efficient use of resources in support of complex student needs.
The Board seeks an agreement that meets the following objectives:
- Improved operational effectiveness
- Fiscal sustainability
- Expediency so that contract talks are concluded by summer
- Increased transparency for the public
We look forward to meeting with the mediator and union representatives and are hopeful a settlement will be forthcoming.
