Bring your friends and family to the Guilford Central School on April 29th from 9:30-11:00 to create your own Box Banjo.
The Box Banjo is a classic homemade instrument. The idea of “spiking” a stick through a resonating container and adding strings is universal and age old. Many of the earliest instruments in history used this basic but effective construction.
In our case, a pine stick is first passed through a small cardboard box. Two nylon fishing line strings are added using eye screws for tuners. Once the strings are tensioned, it is ready to play. Decoration makes each instrument unique. This is an instrument that can make real music.
Dennis Waring is an ethnomusicologist, instrument maker, educator and performer. Comfortable with all styles of music, Dennis preforms throughout the northeast with various music groups. He offers his globally oriented productions through lecture presentations in colleges and universities as well as assembly programs and workshops in public schools. As a Master Teaching Artist, he was honored as Connecticut State Troubadour for 2003 and 2004.
Over his career, Dr. Waring has built thousands of box banjos with people of all ages. He can attest that the pride of building ones own instrument is hugely gratifying.
The cost for this workshop is $25.00/banjo. This workshop is appropriate for all ages. Bring your friends and family!
