Hearing at the State House

Past event
Apr 4, 2017, 5:30 to 7:30 PM

I am writing this with my citizen hat on.
One of my promises to myself (as a school board candidate) and to the people of Calais is to keep you informed and thereby involved.
Now that the official WCSU Act 46 Study Committee has dissolved the onus is on our individual towns (and then coming together) to figure out how to meet the goals of Act 46. I am looking for your help and willingness to engage in informal get-togethers to discuss our school and the role local control plays in it.
This will not be a one-time thing – we will need to keep at it for a while.
It will take a great effort for all of us. More on this part later.

RIGHT NOW - the first effort – even sacrifice - I am asking of you is to find a way to attend the Hearing at the State House – Room 11 on the first floor - on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 from 5:30 – 7:30. Have some fun. Bring a carload and go out for snacks afterwards.

We need you there. Being there does not commit you to testifying.
If you wish to testify (3 minutes only) be there by 5:00 PM to sign up.
The Committee will accept written testimony which may be left at the hearing or e-mailed to:

The-is Hearing has been called by the House Education Committee on Senate bill S.122, an act relating to increased flexibility for school district mergers. This bill only adds a very few (3-4) rigid merger possibilities other than the original one board-one budget model. None of these would benefit towns like ours that wish to maintain their local schools with local boards.

This will be big – there are carloads of people coming from southern Vermont and other far flung places – certainly we can mosey on down to Montpelier to tell the Education Committee we want flexibility to design what works best for us.

I’m hoping to see many of you there.

Dot Naylor
