The Burlington Choral Society, under the baton of Richard Riley, artistic director, will crown celebrations of its 40th anniversary season with performances of Johannes Brahms, A German Requiem (Ein Deutsches Requiem), one of the most beloved of major works for chorus.
The piece will be sung in English with the piano accompaniment, as it was in 1871, just three years after its German premiere. Also on the program is Brahms' passionate Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), in the original scoring for chorus and two pianos.
Claire Black, piano, Sarah Cullins, soprano soloist, and Geoffrey Penar, baritone soloist are featured in the Requiem.
Claire Black and Diane Huling play Brahms' own four-hand piano arrangement for the Schicksalslied.
BCS’s first performance in Central Vermont will be at the Barre Opera House on Sunday, 23 April at 4 pm. Barre tickets are at the Opera House box office, www.barreoperahouse.org and (802) 476-8188.
Prices are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors.
