WITHOUT ART

What is our culture as Americans? As Vermonters? What inspiration and art forms (visual, performing, spoken, written, musical, culinary,…) do you carry from your culture? What pieces of your culture and history have you chosen to leave behind, and why? What have you recovered? What do your culture's arts mean to you?

Of the Better Kind, a new play centered around Burlington’s “Little Jerusalem,” the Jewish Lithuanian community of the early 20th century, opens at the Main Street Landing Black Box Theater, May 19-21. At the center of the play is artist Ben Zion Black, painter of what is now known as the Lost Shul Mural. Inspired by his vibrant community of immigrants, and the culture they carried across the ocean, the story of the Lost Shul Mural highlights the innate drive and desire communities have to create and carry forward their culture’s arts—even in the most dire of circumstances. And how these creations, and the humble legacies that inspire them, so often are lost.

Leading up to this production, and coordinated with The Fletcher Free Library's Smithsonian exhibit, Exploring Human Origins, we ask you to gather with us and share your insights and stories.

WITHOUT ART: A COMMUNITY FORUM
Wednesday, March 29
A space for community engagement as we invite you to share stories about the role of the arts in culture, of identity, of survival. Come join us as we explore our rich and diverse cultures, and the ways in which we use the arts to create identity, community, and social justice.

And then we will have another event the following week:

WITHOUT ART: OPEN MIC
Wednesday, April 5
An evening of spoken word/poetry. Come read your own work, or pieces that inspire you. Share a poem or story of your culture’s art, identity, or survival. Or just come listen.

Sponsored in part by Fletcher Free Libary, as part of their Smithsonian Exploring Human Origins exhibit, Theatre Kavanah, and Burlington City Arts Community Fund grant.
