The Barre Town Democratic Committee will hold an open meeting on Saturday, March 25, from 8:00 to 9:00 am at the Barre Town Municipal Building on Websterville Road. All are invited. Louise Coates, committee chair, noted that "many people are uneasy and even angry at the direction the new president is moving the country." The meeting will offer an opportunity to talk about issues with like-minded people and also to begin to develop steps for action as a group.
"People are looking for ways to devote the negative energy they feel toward projects for change," Coates added. "This includes running for local office, supporting like-minded candidates, and identifying people who would make good candidates. We are looking for people who may not consider themselves particularly political but who may make positive, sensible contributions to local boards as well as state and national offices. We also welcome those who want to work behind the scenes, including raising funds."
Barre Town's general election will be held on Tuesday, May 9 when two seats on the selectboard will be voted on - one for a two year term and one for a three year term. The deadline to submit petitions to run for Town offices is 5 pm, Monday, March 27. This is not an onerous process, and Barre Town Democrats may be able to help. If you would like to get started now and want help, please call Barre Town Democratic Chair Louise Coates at 279-6378 or Vice Chair Guy Isabelle at 229-8159.
