Syria-Palestine Panel Discussion at GMC (East Room)

Green Mountain College's Students for Justice in Palestine will be hosting a panel in Withey Hall's East Room at 6:30 pm on Wed. March 15th to discuss and debate the situation in Syria and its connection to Palestine.

Loubna Mrie, Wael Elasady, and Ashley Smith will be on the panel that "will aim to clarify the stance we must take on Syria, unravel the myth that Bashar and his father supported Palestinian liberation, and look into the question of what it will take for Palestinians, as well as Syrians, to get free." Here are short biographies of the panelists:

LOUBNA MRIE is a Syrian activist who participated in the initial stages of the revolution. She later became a photojournalist with Reuters based in Aleppo, where she covered the ongoing conflict in the Idlib, Aleppo, Latakia, and Hama governorates. Originally from the Syrian coastal city of Jableh, she is currently based in New York City where she is completing an MA at NYU. Her work has been published in the Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the New Republic, among other publications

WAEL ELASADY is a Palestinian-Syrian born in Damascus. He is a co-founder of Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights at Portland State University and a member of the International Socialist Organizations. He has written for the Al-manshour newspaper in Beirut Lebanon and is a frequent contributor to SocialistWorker.org

ASHLEY SMITH is on the Editorial Board of the International Socialist Review (ISR). He has written numerous articles for the ISR as well as New Politics, Socialist Worker, and Jacobin. He is currently working on a book entitled Socialism and Anti-Imperialism for Haymarket Books. He is also a political activist and member of the International Socialist Organization in Burlington, Vermont.
