Montpelier is one of at least 15 cities across the country planning massive Irish sessions this Sunday to raise money for the ACLU. Ours will be held from 4-6 at La Puerta Negra, 2nd and 3rd floor, 44 Main Street. All instruments, singers, dancers, and listeners are welcome to come and support the ACLU. A note for musicians: If you are able, please bring something to sit on while you play.
A little background on this event - given that the Irish themselves found sanctuary in America in times of oppression, starvation, and unimaginable poverty, musicians in the Boston Irish community felt it important to add their voices (and music) to those concerned about the trend in the country toward exclusion and prejudice. They then reached out to the broader community of Irish musicians in a nationwide effort to support the civil rights of all people. The response was immediate: in addition to Montpelier’s event, there will be Sanctuary Sessions held in Portland, ME; Chicago; New York; Boston; Philadelphia; Baltimore; Los Angeles; Portland, OR; Martha’s Vineyard; Asheville, NC; Silver Spring, MD; South Bend IN; Arlington, VA, Cincinnati, OH; St. Louis, MO; San Francisco; Milwaukee, WI; Dublin Ireland, and many other cities.
