Dear Rumney Community Members,

We are writing with an update on the search for an interim principal.

Since Adam Rosen’s leave of absence which started on February 17, 2017, various administrators from the Central Office have been filling in at the Rumney School. Retired Superintendent Alice Angney of East Montpelier is tentatively scheduled to fill in as an interim principal starting after our break on March 5, 2017 on a temporary basis until a long term interim principal is hired to complete the current school year. A retired principal named Don Schneider of Waterbury Center, Vermont, who formerly worked at Thatcher Brook Elementary School has been identified by Superintendent Bill Kimball as a potential interim principal candidate.

As part of the effort to determine whether Mr. Schneider and Rumney are a mutually good fit, he is scheduled to meet with the Rumney Staff on Friday, February 24, 2017.

He is then scheduled to be available to community members on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the Rumney Library starting at 3:45 pm. We understand that this is during the school break when some parents and community members will not be available, but we encourage any and all who are available to come and meet and talk with Don Schneider.

At 4:30 on March 1st, following the community meet and greet with Mr. Schneider, the Board will meet and interview him. We encourage staff members and community members to provide comments to the Board after each have had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Schneider. Paper will be available for writing comments and observations which may be anonymous that the Board can then consider after its interview.

Hiring an interim principal, particularly given the immediate need to fill this position, does not follow the same process we have for selecting a permanent principal. That said, it is the Board and superintendent’s goal to give both staff and community members the opportunity to take part in this process and provide feedback to the Board and we look forward to receiving this input.

The Board’s goal for an interim principal is to provide the Rumney Community with an individual to guide the continued operation of the school through the end of the school year. It is not the intent of the Board that our interim principal, whoever it may be, will guide the community climate work upon which we have embarked. That work will is in the hands of our staff, parents, community members, Central Office, and our new permanent principal, when that individual is selected.

Please feel free to direct any questions on this process to Lauri Scharf, Board Chair, at Lauri.Scharf@gmail.com.
